Four African students put their heads together and came up with a Generator that is powered by the most natural resource available to man – Urine.
Who says Africa is Underdeveloped? Who says Africa can’t succeed?
Duro-Aina Adebola, Akindele Abiola, and Faleke Oluwatoyin, all 14, and Bello Eniola, 15, collaborated on the invention, which they claim generates one hour of electricity from one liter (about a quart) of urine.
The pee-powered product made its debut at Maker Faire Africa in Lagos, Nigeria, this week. A post on the Maker Faire Africa blog describes the generator’s workings in the following words:
- Urine is put into an electrolytic cell, which separates out the hydrogen.
- The gas cylinder pushes hydrogen into a cylinder of liquid borax, which is used to remove the moisture from the hydrogen gas.
- This purified hydrogen gas is pushed into the generator.
As Wole Soyinka once said in an Interview online “Nigeria is frustratingly talented with both Natural resources and Brain power” – Soyinka himself is living proof of such talent, he proceeded to say that the Government needs to induce certain programmes that will allow these talents to be utilised in Nigeria and Africa.
We have seen/heard of many Africans making landmark developments working for Organisations in other countries such as Nasa, IBM, e.t.c.
Mark my words, these girls are going to be famous scientists one day if they keep up with inventions like this; but it wouldn’t be too long before they are enticed away from the shores of Nigeria by an overseas industry who obviously values intellectual prowess more than the Nigeran Government seems to.
Again, I implore the Nigerian Government to take these girls under their wing and ensure that they develop under the Nation’s care. This goes out to other African countries too. Stop paying scientists and Engineers from other parts of the world to come and develop your country. Find your own Einstein, he or she is right there under your nose.
