YouTube had to shut down comments on this video, It became a popular topic on Reddit, everyone one is talking about it, What is so special about this advert?.
The advert is a new one for Cheerios cereal, developed by Saatchi & Saatchi New York. It features an interracial family talking about the benefits of the cereal for the heart. It ends with a little girl emptying a box of Cheerios on her father’s chest as he naps.
How such a simple and even “Cute” cereal advert managed to garner so much HATE and DISGUST bemuses me. Since the Ad was released, It has been attacked with racists comments and Nazi style abuses forcing YouTube to shut down its comment system.
The Racist comments spilled over to Reddit (a popular discussion forum) where the main topic was based on the notion that Black men do not stay with their family and that the advert was inaccurate by depicting otherwise.
Meredith Tutterow, associate marketing director for Cheerios at General Mills in Golden Valley, Minnesota stated that the advert will “absolutely not” be withdrawn, “There are many kinds of families, and Cheerios just wants to celebrate them all.”
I really can’t believe that people are bothered by a bi-racial family being represented on Tv, The President of the United States of America is a product of an interracial relationship for goodness sake. Everywhere we go, we see multicultural families – That is the point of racial diversity.
Of all the things to get “mad” about some people pick a cheerios advert. What’s next? Are people going to argue about Tellytubbies? or Pingu?
50years ago, we would not have heard of such comments, but with the advent of the internet it has become much more easier to get yourself heard these days and even the “Bad” people so to speak now have a medium to express themselves too and we must learn to filter and disregard such nonsense.
