Rap/Hip Hop Lyrics Today- Misogynistic or Misinterpreted?

rick-ross

Now let me give you a quick synopsis – Rick Ross is an American Rap Artist. . Quite Obese, African American and well he used to be a correctional officer. If you follow Rap Music, you should know that it is largely based on Patriarchy.. Predominantly populated by African Americans and well it appeals to most ethnic backgrounds, but no one older than 50 – Has a very strong effect on young kids aged 9-20.

In the Rap game, Women are treated with little or no respect, They usually play the part of Video Vixens subject to the Sexual puns and Lyrics of the Artist.. They aren’t called women or ladies .. You will find more “Ghetto Appropriate” terms being used to refer to women.. terms such as Bitch, Hoe, It. . e.t.c  Its almost as if  for the 2-3mins duration of their hit singles, Rap artists have the uncanny ability to forget that their Mothers/Sisters are females.

Anyways back to the issue at hand, Rick Ross performed a song called U.O.E.N.O in which he rapped lyrics that said –

Put Molly all in her champagne, she ain’t even know it
I took her home and I enjoyed that, she ain’t even know it

Now Let me explain the lyrics, “Put Molly in her Champagne she aint even know it –  Molly is a form of Ecstasy and Mdma (A recreational Drug)

The lyrics insinuate that Ross drugged the lady in question without her knowledge; the second part of the lyrics state – “I took her home and I enjoyed that, she ain’t even know itthis suggests that he took the now heavily drugged lady and proceeded to have sexual intercourse with her.

There are a lot of things wrong about that line, he even refers to the lady as “That” the same way one will refer to an inanimate object. The main issue with this line however is that it is a clear act of Date rape and the fact that Ross has chosen to rap about such a sensitive issue by making it seem somewhat acceptable is quite disappointing. It makes one think – what on earth are our kids listening to these days?

Ross’s sponsors – Reebok are contemplating cancelling their sponsorship (One thing i don’t understand is Why would a clearly overweight man be a spokesperson for a sportswear company anyways?) Ross of course denies any reference to date rape.. Here is what he said –

“I wanted to come down to the radio station. There is certain things you can’t tweet, you have to verbalize. I want to make sure this is clear, that woman is the most precious gift known to man, you understand? It was a misunderstanding with a lyric, a misinterpretation where the term rape wasn’t used. I would never use the term rape. As far as my camp, hip hop don’t condone that. The streets don’t condone that. Nobody condones that. So I wanted to reach out to all the queens that’s on my timeline, all the sexy ladies, the beautiful ladies that have been reaching out to me with the misunderstanding. We don’t condone rape and I’m not with that.”

That statement was most likely written by someone in his PR team desperate to save whatever that is left of his Image.. what they However forgot to do was to explain the lyrics. I mean if you are telling everyone that you were misinterpreted, then what is the actual explanation of the lyrics??

Re-interpret it for us please??
