Ruby Bridges : A Real American Hero

The true story of Ruby Bridges an African-American girl who, in 1960 at age 6 helped to integrate the all-white schools of New Orleans. She became the first Black girl to attend an all white elementary school. The School in question was William Frantz Elementary School- Upon her attendance, parents withdrew their children from school and teachers refused to teach a Black Child.  Only one teacher was refused to quit her job and was willing to teach Ruby. Her name was Barbara Henry   – both she and Ruby received insults and death threats on their way to school everyday. Ruby had to be escorted by US marshals for her safety –  she emerged unscathed, physically or emotionally. Encouraged by her teacher, and her mother, Lucille, and with her own quiet strength, she eventually broke down a century-old barrier forever, a pivotal moment in the civil-rights movement.
